Monolithic Power Systems, Inc. was founded in 1997 by Michael Hsing, who is the current CEO. Prior to the founding of the corporation, Michael worked as a Senior Silicon Technology Developer at several analog integrated circuit companies.

In May 1998, the company launched a single-chip solution for powering CCFL backlighting in Notebook computers. The product substantially reduced the total solution cost and design complexity, as well as significantly improved power conversion.

The company then diversified into DC/DC products, which again reset the industry standard. In November 2004, Michael took the company IPO. Since then, the company has grown to 6 product lines with more than 1000 products.

Monolithic Power Systems is headquartered in San Jose, California and has manufacturing houses in Los Gatos, California and Taipei, Taiwan. It designs, develops, and markets integrated power solutions and power delivery architectures for communications, storage and computing, consumer electronics, industrial, and automotive markets. It markets its products through third party distributors, value-added resellers, and directly to original equipment manufacturers, original design manufacturers, and electronic manufacturing service providers in China, Taiwan, Europe, Korea, Southeast Asia, Japan, the United States.

The company provides digital, analog, and mixed-signal integrated circuits. It offers DC to DC converter ICs that are used to convert and control voltages of various electronic systems, such as portable electronic devices, wireless LAN access points, computers, set top boxes, displays, automobiles, and medical equipment. The company also provides lighting control ICs for backlighting that are used in systems that provide the light source for LCD panels in notebook computers, LCD monitors, car navigation systems, and LCD televisions. In addition, it offers AC/DC offline solutions for lighting illumination applications and AC/DC power conversion solutions for various end products that plug into a wall outlet.
