Exar Corporation is an American semiconductor manufacturer. Having acquired companies such as hifn, Exar was acquired by MaxLinear Inc. for $687 million in May 2017. Exar is listed on the New York Stock Exchange.
In 1970, the Japanese semiconductor company Rohm established the U.S. subsidiary company Exar in California. In 1994, Rohm sold out its remaining Exar ownership.
On April 3, 2009, Exar Corporation closed the acquisition of hi/fn, inc. The transaction included stock and about $67 million in cash. On March 22, 2013, Exar acquired the assets of Altior in Eatontown, New Jersey. On July 5, 2013, it acquired Stretch, Inc. On June 3, 2014, it acquired most of Integrated Memory Logic Limited. As of March 2016 it had 269 employees.
On March 29, 2017, MaxLinear Inc. announced it would buy Exar Corporation for about $661.6 million cash. The acquisition of Exar Corp for $687 million was completed in May 2017.
